1. Who are eligible to join the Senior Secondary Division?

   All Secondary Form 3 - 6 students in Hong Kong in the school year 2019 – 2020 are eligible to join the Senior Secondary Division.

2. How much do we or our students need to pay to register for the Senior Secondary Division?

   It is FREE to register for the Senior Secondary Division.

3. Our students do not have any programming experience or knowledge. Can they still join the Senior Secondary Division?

   No. Students who join the Senior Secondary Division should have basic understanding of programming.

4. Do students need to purchase or assemble any robots on their own?

   No. In the Competition, participating students will be assigned robots to complete the Competition missions, and they do not have to purchase or assemble any robots on their own.

5. Can you explain more about the Competition for the Senior Secondary Division?

   The Competition for the Senior Secondary Division will be held in the afternoon on the Competition Date. Participating teams shall control tangible robots to compete against different teams.

6. How can eligible students form teams to join the Senior Secondary Division?

   Each secondary school in Hong Kong may send multiple teams to participate in the Senior Secondary Division, and each team shall be composed of TWO Secondary Form 3 - 6 students from the SAME secondary school.

7. Can eligible students from our school form teams with other eligible students from other secondary schools?

   No, eligible students can only form teams with other eligible students from the SAME secondary school only.

8. Can an eligible student register for both the Junior and Senior Secondary Divisions?

   No. Each eligible student shall register for ONE(1) division ONCE only. Repeated registrations will be rejected.

9. How should we register for our students?

   Secondary schools should follow the steps below to register for their students:

   1. Click the "Register Now" button on this website.
   2. Fill in and submit the online registration form.
   3. The contact person will be contacted by us within 3 working days to confirm the registration.

10. Can our school send multiple teams to join the Senior Secondary Division?

    Yes, each secondary school may send multiple teams to join the Senior Secondary Division.

11. Can students register for the Senior Secondary Division on their own?

    No. Students who would like to join the Senior Secondary Division should be registered by their schools.

12. I would like to register for my kid. What should I do?

    Students who would like to join the Senior Secondary Division should be registered by their schools only. Please contact your kid's school for details.

13. How many teams will participate in the Senior Secondary Division?

    A maximum of 32 teams shall participate in the Senior Secondary Division. In the case that the total number of registered teams after the registration period is greater than 32, a ballot performed by a random computer process will be conducted to determine the 32 teams.
    EXCEPTION: The best 8 teams in 2019 Competition are eligible to the competition automatically. They will be seeded in different groups as well.

14. When do we need to give the student names ?

    During the workshop or the competition, whenever the earlier.
    Please carry with you the student cards and/or student handbooks.

15. How can participating students register for the free pre-Competition coding workshop?

    Once participation is confirmed, students will be assigned student accounts for logging in to the Competition app. Multiple time slots for the free pre-Competition coding workshop will be available for students to choose from, and students can use their student accounts to register for their preferred timeslots to attend the workshop.

16. Is it mandatory for participating students to join the free pre-Competition coding workshop?

    No, but participating students are encouraged to join the free pre-Competition coding workshop to get a thorough understanding of the Competition app and Google Blockly. Also, robot-on-lease for the competition will be distributed in the workshop.

17. If we decide we can handle the competition without participating in the workshop after reading the Guidelines, what should I do?

    If you decide not to participate in the workshop, please select "Participate in Competition but not Learning Workshop". After last day of workshop reservation, we may ask other schools in waiting list to replace if not filled. Please note that robot-on-least will be distributed in the workshop.

18. When and where will the Competition take place?

    For the Senior Secondary Divisions, the Competition will take place on September 19, 2020 (Saturday) at Ho Sin Hang Engineering Building, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shatin.

20. Will lunch be provided?

    No lunch will be provided. Participating students should arrange lunches on their own.

21. When and where will the Competition results be announced?

    The Competition results will be calculated and announced immediately after the competitions at the Competition Venue.

22. When and where will the Awards Ceremony take place?

    The Awards Ceremony will take place at the Competition Venue immediately after the Competition results have been announced.

Objectives

Through a series of robotics missions, to encourage primary and secondary students to:

• Nurture their interest in robotics, computer science and information technology;
• Hone their problem-solving and logical thinking skills; and
• Strengthen their ability to communicate and cooperate effectively.

Eligibility

Each eligible student may register for ONE (1) division ONCE only. Repeated registrations will be rejected.

*Students must have basic understanding of coding to register for the Senior Secondary Division.*

Each secondary school in Hong Kong may send multiple teams, with each team composed of TWO students Secondary Form 3 - 6 students from the SAME school in the school year 2019 - 2020.

A maximum of 32 teams shall participate in the Competition's Division. In the case that the total number of registered teams for the Senior Secondary Division after the registration period is greater than 32, a ballot performed by a random computer process will be conducted to determine the participating teams.

(Exception: The best 8 schools in the robot competition 2019 can automatically enter this year competition without balloting. They will also be seeded into different groups.)

Challenge Format

The Competition will be held in the afternoon on the Competition Date. Participating teams must complete against other school teams multiple times.

Explorer Battle

Participating teams shall build programs with Google Blockly on the competition "Kiddo Code" app for one Explorer robot to compete with another team to push the cubes to opponent's zone automatically using color and pattern recognitions.
Number of cubes remaining on the opponent's zone after the competition time will be the score of the team.
In the first round, teams are assigned in league of four. Each team shall battle two other teams to achieve the higher score.

Winners

After the Knock Out rounds battles, champion, 1st, 2nd and 3rd Runner-up will be determined.

Explorer Robot

The competition robot Explorer will be distribute to teams during the workshop.
Teams cannot modify the core design but are allowed to do two changes: 1. A bumper can be installed in front. It can be designed and 3D-printed. However, the maximum dimensions allowed for the bumper is 130mm(W) x 60mm(H) x 30mm(D). No sharp edge is allowed in the design.

2. Bricks can be added on top of the Chassis. However, the bricks cannot extrude outside of the chassis base.
3. The aggregated weight of (1) and (2) above cannot be larger than 100g

• Champion, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Runner-up are eligible to participate in Silicon Valley Technology Exploring Tour fully sponsored by Chinese University, Towngas and Shun Hing Institute of Advanced Engineering.
  (July~August, 2020)
• The Silicon Valley Technology Exploring Tour in July 2020 will be cancelled. However, the winning teams of the junior secondary and senior secondary divisions in this year’s competitions will be invited and sponsored to join the similar tour activity in the summer of 2021.

Terms & Conditions

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (Electronic Engineering), St. Paul's Convent School (Secondary Section) and Smart Kiddo Education Limited ("Co-Organisers") are the Co-Organisers of "Hong Kong Primary & Secondary Schools STEM Robotics Competition 2020" ("Competition"). Once the online registration form for the Competition is submitted, students and their school representatives, teachers, parents and guardians shall be deemed to have thoroughly read, fully understood and agreed to be bound by the following terms and conditions:

1. The registration form must be completed clearly and accurately. Incomplete or inaccurate registration forms and repeated or late registrations will be rejected.
2. All personal data collected in the registration process will be kept confidential and will only be used in purposes related to ranking charts, results announcements, awards ceremony and Competition reporting. Under these circumstances, students and their school representatives, teachers, parents and guardians consent to the Co-Organisers' use of all personal data collected for these purposes.
3. Under the conditions stipulated in the Rules & Regulations of the Competition, ballot(s) performed by random computer processes shall be conducted by the Co-Organisers to determine the participating teams in the Primary, Junior Secondary and Senior Secondary Divisions. All procedures and results of such ballots are final and no correspondence shall be entered into.
4. For Primary, Junior Secondary and Senior Secondary Divisions, students who shall participate in the Competition will be contacted by the Co-Organisers to confirm the participation. Once participation is confirmed, students will be immediately deemed as "participating students" in the Competition and shall obey all related rules and regulations stipulated in this Terms & Conditions.
5. Before each round of the Competition, participating students must arrive at the Competition Venue no later than the time specified by the Co-Organisers and report to the Competition staff. Any late arrivals shall be considered as automatic abandonment of all participation eligibilities and prizes and no correspondence shall be entered into.
6. Participating students must obey all instructions, rules and regulations stated by the Competition staff, judges, hosts and representatives of the Co-Organisers. The Co-Organisers reserve the right to immediately disqualify any uncooperative participating students and no correspondence shall be entered into.
7. Participating students shall carefully use any and all robots, equipment and materials related to the Competition according to the instructions given by the Competition staff, judges, hosts and representatives of the Co-Organisers. The Co-Organisers reserve the right to immediately disqualify any uncooperative participating students and no correspondence shall be entered into. Should any robots, equipment and materials related to the Competition be lost, damaged or altered in any way, the involved person(s) must pay the replacement cost.
8. During the Competition, participating students shall not disturb or attack others in any way, cheat, attempt to alter or affect the Competition results, or participate in any acts deemed inappropriate by the Co-Organisers. The Co-Organisers reserve the right to immediately disqualify any offending participating students and no correspondence shall be entered into.
9. All participating students and their teachers, parents, guardians and related persons shall be responsible for the safety of their personal property at the Competition Venue at all times. The Co-Organisers do not assume responsibility for any lost, stolen or damaged personal property.
10. The Competition day schedule stipulated in the Rules & Regulations of the Competition is for reference only. The Co-Organisers reserve the right to modify the Competition day schedule at any time.
11. Any and all prizes received by all prize winners are non-exchangeable, non-transferable, and is not redeemable for cash or other prizes at any time.
12. The Co-Organisers reserve the right to substitute any prize with another prize of similar value in the event that the original prize stipulated in the Rules & Regulations of the Competition is not available.
13. Any and all prizes with a stipulated expiry date must be used by the prize winners on or before the stipulated date. Requests to use any expired prizes will not be entertained.
14. Upon receipt and acceptance of any prize, the prize winners consent to the use by the Co-Organisers, both on and after the Competition Date of the Competition for an unlimited time, of their voices, images and photographs for publicity purposes in any medium, including but not limited to photographs, videos, websites and social media accounts of the Co-Organisers and in any advertising, marketing or promotional materials without prior notice or compensation in any way.
15. The Co-Organisers accept no responsibility for any loss, damage, liability, injury, death, disappointment or emotional fluctuation occurred or suffered by the participating students, prize winners and their schools, school representatives, teachers, parents, guardians and related persons as a result of registering or participating in the Competition, or receiving or accepting any and all prizes of the Competition.
16. Any and all decisions related to the Competition made by the Co-Organisers are final and no correspondence shall be entered into.
17. The Co-Organisers will not entertain or be responsible for any and all claims, actions or legal proceedings in connection with the Competition brought by any participating students, teachers, schools, parents, guardians or third parties.
18. The Co-Organisers reserve the right to modify any rules, regulations, terms and conditions related to the Competition or cancel the Competition at any time without prior notice.
19. In case of dispute, the Co-Organisers reserve the right of final decision.
20. The Terms & Conditions of the Competition are written in Traditional Chinese and English. In the event of any inconsistency, the English version shall prevail.
